Feral Swine Damage Management in South Carolina

On January 11, 2024, DOE Savannah River Operations Office (SROO) announced its adoption of the “Final Environmental Assessment Feral Swine Damage Management (FSDM) in South Carolina, DOE/EA- 2243” (Final FSDM EA)  and issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for a pilot project proposed by the U.S. Forest Service – Savannah River (USFS-SR) in coordination with the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Wildlife Service (WS) to remove feral swine from several remote areas on the Savannah River Site (SRS) by means of aerial shooting.

The pilot project was very successful, with a sizeable number of swine removed and with no safety or environmental issues.  Now the USFS-SR proposes to continue the work with APHIS and target additional areas across SRS.  DOE prepared the Supplement Analysis for Continued Feral Swine Damage Management at Savannah River Site (DOE/EA-2243-SA-01) to evaluate whether the existing Final FSDM EA and FONSI remain adequate or whether the proposal for the USFS-SR to enter into an agreement with APHIS WS to continue feral swine removal across SRS via aerial shooting required DOE to prepare a new EA, revise the existing FONSI, or prepare an Environmental Impact Statement.
