Funding will support the project team's small-scale research and development of a 3D radially additive diamond (RAD) printer designed to produce diamond-metal composite materials for use in plasma-facing structures capable of surviving the intense environment of fusion energy machines, plasma processing, and aerospace. Specifically, the project team will (1) test, validate, and refine diamond-metal composite formation for integration with a RAD printer, (2) design prototype RAD printer operating system, (3) produce RAD printed flat surface composites, test and validate to achieve predetermined metrics, (3) apply test outcomes to upgraded RAD printer to fabricate more complex shapes to meet predetermined target metrics, (4); refine and improve RAD printer and material processing to meet final metrics, and (5) prepare final RAD printer and produce final product prototype for full scale testing in plasma-facing system.
