The Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing to issue a Funding Opportunity Announcement (DE-FOA-0001513) that would lead to the selection of 20 to 30 U.S. based universities, with partnering organizations, as “Industrial Assessment Centers” (IACs). The Industrial Assessment Centers would provide extensive training for undergraduate and graduate engineering students in industrial processes, energy assessment procedures, and energy management principles.
IAC-related faculty and staff would lead IAC students in the performance of energy assessments for small and medium sized manufacturers in their geographic region, which would result in energy and water savings, waste reduction, potential enhancements to cyber security, opportunities for smart manufacturing, and sustainability and productivity improvements for the manufacturers and real-world experience for the students. All project activities would consist exclusively of intellectual, academic, analytical activities and technical advice/assistance. These activities would include performing energy saving assessments for small and medium sized enterprises, training undergraduate and graduates to perform these assessments as well as providing them the information needed to understand energy efficiency in a manufacturing environment.
