The Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing to provide funding to the City of Kansas City, to be used as an interest rate buy - down to offset the increased cost of energy saving upgrades in a 276 unit new construction high performance multifamily development called “Second and Delaware.” The proposed project would obtain a “Passivhaus” Certification in the U.S, and consume 80% less energy than comparable buildings in the area. The site is located on a 4 acre site in downtown Kansas City. The energy efficiency project would involve upgrading the building envelope, mechanical and electrical systems, including: building R-30 concrete sandwich walls with no thermal bridging, r-60 roof, triple glazed windows, a building wide dedicated outside air system equipped with Energy Recovery Ventilators and geothermal heating and cooling to precondition the ventilation air, and Variable Refrigerant Flow heating and cooling to all the units. The building would also have a green roof for added insulation and reduced water runoff, and utilize solar photovoltaics to generate electricity.
