Savannah River National Lab (SRNL) proposes to introduce sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) into the 221-H Stack when the canyon is dissolving fuel as part of an ongoing National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) research effort on the signatures of reprocessing. The SF6 serves as a readily identifiable tracer gas that can be tracked online and/or at the line with portable instruments such that the stack plume can be traced offsite and across the Site. The tracking allows SRNL to locate atmospheric sampling equipment to intercept and sample the plume for other gaseous signatures. This sampling effort will be combined with independent stack sampling simultaneously so that the source terms for the signatures can be accurately determined and compared with calculations done for emissions of key radionuclides and fission products and their transport over the region.
