A large dissolved phase chlorinated solvent plume exists in groundwater at the A/M Area Southern Sector. A series of vertical recirculation wells are in place to treat trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) contamination in this portion of the A/M groundwater contamination plume. Laboratory scale research performed by SRNL has determined that the addition of a humate system should result in the enhanced attenuation of TCE and PCE present at Southern Sector. South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control (SCDHEC) has reviewed the bench scale study results and issued a TA. Under the TA, Savannah River Nuclear Solutions is allowed to perform an extended field scale humate injection and monitoring campaign to evaluate the use of this innovative approach for treatment of volatile organic compounds (e.g., TCE and PCE) in Southern Sector groundwater.
