Material samples are irradiated in the Savannah River National Laboratory Cobalt-60 source facility in closed containers specifically designed for this purpose. The only emission is the gas within the container- initially the container is filled with either ambient air, dry nitrogen, argon, protium or deuterium at 1 atmosphere pressure, or is evacuated. Materials can produce gas during the irradiation - the study of this radiolytically produced gas is a main goal of this research. It is also possible that the material absorbs gas, there can be a net decrease of gas in the container.
