On January 12, 2017, NuScale Power formally announced the submission of a Design Certification Application (DCA) for their innovative small modular reactor (SMR) design to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for their review and approval. With this submittal, NuScale is now the first U.S. company to have submitted an SMR DCA. Once approved, the certified NuScale SMR will be available to domestic and international customers to be licensed for construction and operation. The NRC review is expected to take approximately 40 months. Read the NuScale Power press release announcing this event.

Achievement of this important event was made possible through the support of the Department's SMR Licensing Technical Support program, which has provided cost-shared financial and technical assistance under a cooperative agreement with NuScale Power. The program was initiated in 2012 to accelerate safe, innovative SMR technologies into the marketplace to meet the economic, environmental and energy security goals of our nation. This event is a major step forward in meeting these goals, and we look forward to continuing to work with NuScale as the design review moves toward completion.
