Opportunities for Tribal Entities
Energy Innovator Fellowship (Apply to be a Host)
Tribal entities, such as energy offices and Tribal utilities—alongside regional transmission organizations, state energy offices, and electric cooperatives—can apply to host a dedicated, fully funded, early-career fellow. Host organizations gain expert technical assistance to modernize their local power grids, improve transmission reliability, and implement clean energy infrastructure.
National Nuclear Security Administration Tribal Education Partnership Program (TEPP)
TEPP supports diverse workforce development, including by funding partnerships between the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs). The program prepares students for high-tech careers in engineering, science, and national security in partnership with DOE National Laboratories.
Opportunities for Individuals
Energy Innovator Fellowship (Apply to be a Fellow)
Recent graduates and early-career energy professionals can apply to be fellows, where they would spend up to two years working directly with critical energy organizations (such as Tribal entities, state utility commissions, and co-op utilities). Fellows receive a stipend while gaining hands-on experience solving real-world energy challenges.
Bonneville Power Administration: Apprenticeship and Internship Programs
BPA offers robust paid apprenticeship and internship options. Participants train directly under skilled craftspeople in fields such as electrical transmission, substation maintenance, and grid operations, securing a clear pathway to long-term Federal utility careers.
Office of Science: Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI)
SULI places undergraduate students and recent graduates in paid internships at participating DOE National Laboratories. Under the mentorship of premier staff scientists and engineers, interns perform research supporting the national commitment to scientific innovation.
Office of Science: Community College Internship (CCI) Program
Specifically tailored for community college students, the CCI Program provides technical training and hands-on research experiences at DOE National Laboratories, helping transition students directly into competitive science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers.
American Association for the Advancement of Science: Science & Technology Policy Fellowships
Scientists and engineers with select graduate degrees can apply for year-long policy-immersion assignments in Washington, D.C. Fellows contribute their analytical and scientific expertise directly to the Federal policymaking process within executive branch offices (including DOE), legislative offices, or judicial branches.
