The Energy Department will present a webinar titled "Understanding the Energy Policy and Regulatory Environment" on Wednesday, May 4, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time. The webinar, which was originally scheduled for April 27, will highlight how a working knowledge of land use and energy regulations and policies can help streamline the development of energy projects on tribal lands. Attendees will get tips for navigating the maze of federal, regional and state policies, rules, and regulations; discover how tribes can apply this knowledge in developing their own regulations and targets; and explore how tribal and inter-tribal policies can be implemented to promote tribal energy and economic sovereignty and support a sustainable energy future.

The lineup of webinar presenters includes:

  • Doug MacCourt, Senior Policy Advisor, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Indian Energy
  • Jana Ganion, Energy Director, Blue Lake Rancheria
  • Theresa Cole, Special Project Coordinator, Akwesasne Housing Authority

Part of the 2016 Tribal Energy and Economic Development Webinar Series sponsored by the DOE Office of Indian Energy and the Western Area Power Administration, the webinar will introduce policy as a pillar of the Office of Indian Energy’s strategic roadmap for maximizing the development and deployment of energy solutions that benefit tribal communities.

Speakers will also:

  • Explore online tools and resources designed to provide easy access to useful data on state and federal energy regulations and policies
  • Discuss the need for states to develop policy guidelines that facilitate tribal participation in and contributions to critical state and national energy and climate policy goals, initiatives, and mandates
  • Present tribal case studies on leveraging state and federal policies and incentives to advance leading-edge tribal energy, climate, and sustainability goals and initiatives
