On January 25th, the three countries jointly released the report of the Mission Innovation (MI) Clean Energy Materials Challenge workshop. This experts workshop focused on use of machine learning, robotics and supercomputing to accelerate the process of finding new high-performance and low cost energy materials. The workshop, held last September in Mexico City, attracted more than one hundred and thirty participants - including 55 leading scientists from around the world - to define the challenges, opportunities, and fundamental research needs related to materials discovery. Dr. Kristin Persson, LBNL, co-chaired the workshop. The report emphasized the importance of developing multidisciplinary international teams of scientists and engineers with expertise in chemistry, materials sciences, advanced computing, robotics and AI, among other disciplines.
The workshop report provides the tools to enable any MI member or MI partner to solicit research proposals and award peer-reviewed grants focused on the most important, promising and potentially transformative research needs and opportunities. It is anticipated that the report will attract broad attention and convey a compelling sense of opportunity among investors. As a follow-on effort to continue building on this important work in materials, Canada is hosting a workshop: R&D Priorities for Structural Materials and 3D Printing, March 15-16, 2018 at McMaster Innovation Park, Hamilton, ON (see workshop link - http://ic6-2.mission-innovation.net/).
