When the 2022-2026 Multi-Year Program Plan was published, the Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) operated with the former Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. As of early 2026, the office has been renamed the Office of Geothermal and now operates within the Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office (HGEO).
In some cases, GTO uses impact evaluations conducted by independent external experts to quantify research-attributed outcomes for geothermal. Such outcomes may include economic performance (e.g., return on funding), knowledge diffusion (e.g., measured via various patent citation metrics), market effects (e.g., changes in the scale-up of supply and distribution chains, consumer awareness, and adoption decision practices), and benefit-cost assessments.8
