
Nicholas Balsmeier currently serves as the Acting Manager for the Idaho Cleanup Project (ICP), responsible for the management and oversight of the treatment, storage, and disposition of a variety of radioactive and hazardous waste streams, removal and disposition of targeted buried waste, and the removal of DOE’s inventory of spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste from Idaho.
He has a wealth of knowledge and over 20 years of experience with aerospace, nuclear maintenance, operations and oversight of environmental restoration activities.
He has been with the ICP for more than 11 years as federal staff, and five years as a contractor. He was formerly the Assistant Manager for Idaho Nuclear Technology and Engineering Center. In this role, Balsmeier managed spent nuclear fuel, liquid waste and high-level waste programs at ICP located on the Idaho National Laboratory Site.
Prior to being the assistant manager, he served in multiple ICP positions, including task order integration manager, maintenance and work control program manager, senior facility representative, and facility representative at the Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project and Radiological Waste Management Complex where he was twice recognized as the DOE National Facility Representative of the Year.
A proud veteran with 20 years in the U.S. Air Force and the Idaho Air National Guard, he holds an associate degree in aerospace maintenance technology, a Bachelor of Arts degree in business management and finance, and a master’s degree in environmental management with an emphasis in occupational safety and health.
