Members of eight local advisory boards across the DOE complex focused on opportunities and challenges at cleanup sites and interacted with EM leaders during a recent two-day virtual meeting.

Savannah River Nuclear Solutions and Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) developed a mock-up to test underwater cameras and accompanying long-handled tools to perform examinations of spent nuclear fuel bundles in a basin at the Savannah River Site. EM and the management and operations contractor at the Savannah River Site (SRS) recently used underwater cameras for the first time to complete examinations.

Strategic Vision is Roadmap to Greater EM Success, White Tells Stakeholders

EM’s Strategic Vision 2021-2031 should be considered a roadmap for even greater success in the cleanup program, EM Acting Assistant Secretary William “Ike” White told more than 180 community stakeholders.

Workers with Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos cut up plastic storage tanks for recycling at the Los Alamos Eco Station. The tanks had been used to support groundwater monitoring activities at Los Alamos National Laboratory and have since expired.

Los Alamos Diverts 5 Tons of Plastic From Landfill, Saving Taxpayer Dollars

The EM Los Alamos Field Office (EM-LA) and its cleanup contractor recently launched a new recycling initiative that diverted nearly 5 tons of plastic from a local landfill in April.

Alaina Adams works as a laboratory technician at Savannah River National Laboratory. She earned a degree through the Environmental Remediation and Restoration Program (ERRP) at the University of South Carolina Aiken. ERRP is a program supported by DOE's Workforce Opportunities in Regional Careers grant program.

EM Sites Team Up to Conduct Virtual Waste Inspection

Two EM programs recently collaborated to enhance an established radioactive waste inspection process, allowing for continued safe, secure, and compliant waste shipments from one DOE site to another.

Kien Nguyen, a student at Bearden High School in Knoxville, Tennessee, was the lead student on a project funded by a grant UCOR awarded last year to teach students about cybersecurity firewalls. The school won multiple UCOR grants this year.

Oak Ridge Contractor Awards $30,000 in Grants to 30 Area Schools

Oak Ridge cleanup contractor UCOR is awarding $30,000 in grants for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) projects to benefit 30 schools across a nine-county region.
