The Department of Energy’s Environmental Management Site-Specific Advisory Board (EM SSAB) involves stakeholders more directly in EM cleanup decisions. The Board is federally-chartered to provide advice and recommendations concerning EM cleanup activities, including, but not limited to, environmental restoration; waste management and disposition; excess facilities; budget prioritization, future land use and long-term stewardship.
The Board’s membership reflects a variety of viewpoints of community members living and working near EM sites. While only one EM SSAB exists, eight local boards have been organized under its umbrella charter. The eight local boards are: Hanford Advisory Board, Idaho Cleanup Project Citizens Advisory Board, Nevada SSAB, Northern New Mexico Citizens’ Advisory Board, Oak Ridge SSAB, Paducah Citizens Advisory Board, Portsmouth SSAB and the Savannah River Site Citizens Advisory Board.
- No experience is necessary – all community members are welcome to apply.
- EM SSAB members are appointed for a two-year term. Members may apply for reappointment and serve a total of six years.
- EM SSAB members are not compensated for their service.
- DOE provides reimbursement for authorized travel and subsistence (federal per diem) expenses for eligible members.
- You must be a U.S. citizen or a legal resident to serve on the EM SSAB.
- Current U.S. Federal government employees are ineligible to serve on the EM SSAB.

If selected to serve on the EM SSAB, you are expected to follow all applicable federal policies and local bylaws including attending board meetings and related training events, reviewing background materials, and working cooperatively with the membership to fulfill the purpose of the board. Your membership is for the benefit of the community and cannot be used for personal or professional gain.
