Office of Environmental Management Appoints Director of the Environmental Management Consolidated Business Center

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management (EM) announced today the appointment of Jack Zimmerman as Director of the Environmental Management Consolidated Business Center (EMCBC), in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Mr. Zimmerman is presently Manager of the Idaho Cleanup Project at the Idaho National Laboratory. For the past five years he has provided leadership in all aspects of the EM cleanup mission at the site, involving high level radioactive waste, low level and transuranic radioactive waste, spent nuclear fuel, and contaminated buildings, sites, and special nuclear material.

“Jack has proved to be an effective leader in tackling some of the greatest challenges of the EM mission in Idaho,” said Under Secretary for Science Paul Dabbar. “We are fortunate he has agreed to fill a critical need at EMCBC as EM moves forward on its end state contracting initiative that focuses on cleanup completion.”

Connie Flohr, Deputy Manager of the Idaho Cleanup Project, will serve as Acting Manager.

The EMCBC provides business and technical support services to sites in the DOE complex where EM is performing environmental cleanup from the legacy of 50 years of nuclear weapons development and government-sponsored nuclear research.

Previously, Mr. Zimmerman served as the Depleted Uranium Hexafluoride Federal Project Director and the Contracting Officer’s Representative providing leadership for the design, construction, commissioning, and initial operation of government-owned contractor-operated nuclear chemical processing facilities at DOE sites in Portsmouth, Ohio and Paducah, Kentucky. In a prior role he was the Associate Director of the Mound Closure Project in Miamisburg, Ohio. Mr. Zimmerman has 30 years of experience in many aspects of nuclear facility construction, operation, and environmental remediation.

In addition to providing business and technical support, the EMCBC also has line management authority for EM field sites including the Energy Technology Engineering Center in California; the Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action Project in Utah; the Nevada National Security Site; the Separations Process Research Unit in New York; the West Valley Demonstration Project in New York; and EM cleanup work at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California and the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York.
