IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — Idaho Cleanup Project crews safely removed a crane house from atop a historic Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program prototype recently, marking an important step toward completing above-ground demolition of the facility. The crane house, a tall arched portion of the Aircraft Carrier 1st Generation Westinghouse (A1W) prototype, was a mobile structure connected to the facility on rails, previously used for refueling and maintenance. The A1W served as a testing and training ground at the Naval Reactors Facility at the Idaho National Laboratory Site, where Navy and civilian personnel learned and tested technologies to support the operation of the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise.
