The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced $51.7 million in funding for 19 projects that will advance research and development (R&D) critical to unlock innovative and efficient mobility options that are affordable for all Americans. The Fiscal Year 2024 Vehicle Technologies Office Research & Development funding opportunity was originally announced on April 4, 2024.
Approach
This funding will drive innovation in equitable clean transportation. Projects selected will support the demonstration and deployment of new, efficient, and clean mobility options that are affordable for all Americans, in accordance with strategies and plans detailed in the U.S. National Blueprint for Transportation Decarbonization.

Topic areas in the Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 R&D funding opportunity include:
- Next-generation phosphate-based cathodes (4 projects for $17.01 million in funding)
- Advancing the state of the art for sodium-ion batteries (5 projects for $6.42 million)
- Developing concepts for decreasing greenhouse gas emissions from off-road vehicles such as construction, agriculture, mining, and forestry vehicles (4 projects for $7.24 million)
- Developing and deploying vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technologies that can lead to meaningful savings at the vehicle and transportation system level (2 projects for $7 million)
- Developing high-performance, domestically produced electrical steels (E-steels) for use in electrified powertrains (2 projects for $5.6 million)
- Addressing critical cybersecurity needs for smart and secure electric vehicle charging (2 projects for $8.46 million)
