PROJECT STATEMENT

Southern Company will build or upgrade an estimated 16.7 GW of energy generation capacity from gas, nuclear, hydropower, storage, and transmission projects across two states, providing direct cost savings to customers.

PROJECT SUMMARY

In February 2026, EDF closed an unprecedented $26.5 billion in loans to support two wholly owned subsidiaries of Southern Company—Alabama Power and Georgia Power. Funded under President Trump’s Working Families Tax Cut, the investment will lower American energy costs, create thousands of jobs, and increase grid reliability in Georgia and Alabama.

As of the loan closing, more than 10,000 megawatts (MW) of new generation and upgrades to existing generation are planned to be added across Georgia and Alabama to provide base load power and forecastable, dispatchable capacity for electric customers. New natural gas generation projects underway in Georgia include Plants Bowen, Wansley, McIntosh and Yates, among other sites. Southern Company is also making investments to modernize and upgrade hydroelectric generation facilities from the Coosa River in Alabama, to the mountains of north Georgia to the lakes and rivers of central and western Georgia. Additionally, following the completion of Vogtle Units 3 and 4—the first new nuclear units constructed in more than 30 years and also supported by previous DOE loans—Southern Company is upgrading Vogtle Units 1 and 2 to enable those units to deliver additional energy for customers for decades to come, and planning for additional future upgrades at Plant Hatch and Plant Farley.

PROJECT INNOVATION

This historic investment will expand and enhance a diverse generation mix to deliver over 16 gigawatts (GW) of firm reliable power to the electrical grid, 5 GW of new gas generation, 6 GW in nuclear improved through upgrades and license renewals, hydropower modernization, battery energy storage systems, and over 1,300 miles of transmission and grid enhancement projects.

ECONOMIC IMPACT

The loan will deliver over $7 billion in electricity cost savings to millions of American customers in Georgia and Alabama and will create and sustain thousands of jobs across the two states.
