CESER continues to work to address geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) risks to the Nation’s energy system, particularly the electric grid, in close coordination with federal and industry partners, including the DOE National Laboratories, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the Department of Defense (DoD).

CESER continues to support two key modeling efforts to understand the thermal response of large power transformers and the potential effects of induced harmonics from GMD into the power grid.

CESER, in partnership with other DOE organizations, has begun work to understand how instrumenting transformers in the future could enhance the nation’s understanding of the regular threats GMD poses to the energy sector.

As directed through executive orders and the national defense authorization act, DOE is conducting mitigation pilots at two sites to understand the operational impacts of this technology in the field.

CESER continues to work with the Space Weather Operations, Research, and Mitigation Subcommittee under the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy to coordinate DOE’s efforts on space weather mitigation.

CESER has helped plan and participated in two high level government exercises on GMDs in the past few years.
