About the Webinar
This National Lab Discovery Series webinar featured ShAPE™ (Shear Assisted Processing and Extrusion), an award-winning advanced manufacturing technology developed at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) that enables the production of high-performance materials using solid-phase processing.
Dr. Scott Whalen, PNNL Chief Scientist and DOE's 2026 Innovator of the Year, explored how ShAPE can transform aluminum scrap and other lower-cost feedstocks into high-value materials without conventional melting. The session highlighted opportunities to reduce manufacturing costs, improve processing efficiency, and make greater use of domestically sourced materials, along with applications across automotive, aerospace, construction, energy infrastructure, and other advanced manufacturing industries.
