21st Century Energy Workforce Advisory Board (EWAB)

Mission

The 21st Century Energy Workforce Advisory Board (EWAB) advises the Secretary of Energy in developing a strategy for the Department of Energy (DOE) to support and develop a skilled energy workforce to meet the changing needs of the U.S. energy system.

Activities

EWAB’s activities include:

  • On July 9, 2025, the EWAB voted unanimously to submit an EWAB Special Report: Opportunities for Amercian Workers in Energy with recommendations for the Department to implement strategies to increase affordability and economic prosperity by creating “employment opportunities for American workers, including drawing discouraged workers into the labor force” per the Presidential Memorandum on Delivering Emergency Price Relief for American Families and Defeating the Cost-of-Living Crisis.
  • Per 42 USC 18744 that established the EWAB, the Board provides recommendations on a strategy for DOE to:
    • meet current and future industry and labor needs of the energy sector;
    • support opportunities for young people and adults to prepare and connect to a range of jobs, with career mobility potential, in the energy sector;
    • utilize the agency’s technical expertise to support the workforce activities related to energy jobs of other Federal agencies;
    • develop plans to support and retrain displaced and unemployed energy sector workers; and
    • prioritize pathways and retention of workers with a focus on recruitment, high-quality accessible education and training opportunities, and job quality.
  • Identifying the energy sectors in greatest need of workforce training and, in consultation with the Secretary of Labor, developing recommendations for which skills are necessary to meet this need.
