Project Objective

ITN Energy Systems is developing an integrated low-e/electrochromic (EC) window film to be applied in existing windows. While field testing of state-of-the-art EC windows shows that energy savings are maximized if a low-e coating is used in conjunction with the EC, available low-e films have a low visible transmission (~70% or less) that limits the achievable clear state and, therefore, the appearance and energy savings potential. This project will develop a novel low-e film that is optimized for compatibility with EC windows but that can also be used independently. Successful completion of the effort will produce a prototype integrated low-e, dynamic window film with an increased energy savings potential over state-of-the-art EC windows.

Project Impact

ITN Energy Systems estimates that 5 quads of energy are lost annually through windows -- depending on market adoption rates, this project could result in approximately 2 quads of energy savings annually.
