October 28, 2026WASHINGTON—The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation (CMEI) today announced the launch of a new national consortium created to accelerate the transition of advanced battery technologies from laboratory discovery to domestic manufacturing. The Battery Manufacturing Accelerator (BattMan), will bring together national laboratories, universities, and industry to reduce manufacturing costs, shorten commercialization timelines, and strengthen America’s battery manufacturing supply chain.
"The advances we make today in battery manufacturing technology will determine America's energy security and economic competitiveness for decades to come,” said Assistant Secretary of Energy Audrey Robertson. “The Battery Manufacturing Accelerator will fast track commercialization, strengthen domestic supply chains, and help ensure that innovative domestic manufacturing is used for the next generation of battery technologies.”
Advanced batteries are essential to supporting applications across the electric grid, transportation, data centers, advanced manufacturing, and national defense. While researchers continue to develop new battery materials and chemistries, many innovative battery technologies face significant challenges when transitioning from laboratory research to commercial production.
BattMan is designed to address those challenges by integrating AI and advanced manufacturing into a coordinated, data-driven innovation ecosystem to strengthen U.S. battery manufacturing and accelerate the commercialization of next-generation energy storage technologies.
The consortium will help researchers and manufacturers identify manufacturing challenges earlier and improve production processes. Over time, the consortium aims to develop self-optimizing manufacturing systems that combine real-time process monitoring, artificial intelligence, digital twins, and closed-loop control to reduce manufacturing costs and shorten the time required to bring new battery technologies to market.
The Battery Manufacturing Accelerator is supported by CMEI’s Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office and is led by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and includes Argonne National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the National Laboratory of the Rockies. The consortium is also launching industrial and academic partnerships across the battery and materials manufacturing sectors to validate new manufacturing processes and accelerate deployment of commercially viable technologies.
