The Stimulate Utilization of Plentiful Energy in Rocks Through High-Temperature Original Technologies (SUPERHOT) program supports the small-scale research and development of technologies to enable production of geothermal energy from super-hot reservoirs by developing innovative methods of heat extraction through new designs and materials, with a focus on scalable Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) and Advanced Geothermal Systems (AGS) (e.g., closed loop).

October 21, 2026The Stimulate Utilization of Plentiful Energy in Rocks Through High-Temperature Original Technologies (SUPERHOT) program supports the small-scale research and development of technologies to enable production of geothermal energy from super-hot reservoirs by developing innovative methods of heat extraction through new designs and materials, with a focus on scalable Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) and Advanced Geothermal Systems (AGS) (e.g., closed loop). The program consists of two categories: Category 1- Technologies related to the construction of robust, long-term (15 years or more) super-hot wells and validation of quality assurance for new well designs and materials; and Category 2- Technologies related to the extraction of heat from the reservoir to the well by developing effective methods for extracting heat from a super-hot reservoir for at least 10 years without significant decline.
