Over 450 attendees participated in the Genesis Mission Hackathon, developing a strong starting point for integrating their scientific workflows into the Genesis Mission Platform.
October 21, 2026The U.S. Department of Energy's Genesis Mission Hands-on Hackathon brought together over 450 participants from national laboratories, universities, and industry. The gathering hosted at DOE’s Argonne National Laboratory represents a milestone in the Genesis Mission's goal to advance the frontiers of super intelligence (SI) to accelerate discovery and maintain American leadership in science and technology.
From materials science and microelectronics to biology and energy systems, researchers are building the next generation of SI-powered scientific tools that will transform how science is conducted. The challenge? Integrating diverse scientific workflows into a unified American Science and Security Platform that provides open access to models, data, and computing resources.
That's where the Hackathon comes in. The goal was that every Genesis Mission RFA Award team leave with a strong starting point for integrating their scientific workflows into the Genesis Mission Platform. Participants represented 185 research projects.
Over three days, teams got intensive, hands-on support to advance their projects. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, the Hackathon offered three tracks—Foundations, Intermediate, and Advanced—ensuring every team received support tailored to their current stage of development.
The scale of support reflects the Genesis Mission’s commitment to accelerating progress. Teams had access to $1 million in computational resources provided by AWS, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI, plus over 55,000 computing hours from DOE facilities.
More than 120 technical staff from industry and across the DOE complex—including experts from ModCon: Transformational AI Models and Data and the American Science Cloud—allowed teams to tackle technical barriers in real-time, share best practices, and inform continued development of the Genesis Mission Platform.
