LM scored 90% or above for accuracy of data collection in the Facilities Information Management System
October 5, 2026In accordance with DOE Order 430.1C, The Department of Energy (DOE) conducts an annual validation of the real property data captured in the Facilities Information Management System (FIMS) corporate database. These assets include buildings, trailers, land, and other structures and facilities that are leased or owned by DOE, the GSA, contractors, or are classified as “withdrawn.” The validation includes an in brief, random data pull of LM real property assets currently residing in FIMS, a desktop validation, a site walkthrough, and a debrief.
“This validation is important because it gives DOE and LM valuable information about assets,” said LM Real Property Team Supervisor David Steinau. “We can know the condition, potential cost, and possible liabilities across LM’s entire portfolio.”
The validation is ranked based on a red, yellow, or green scorecard. The green scorecard recognizes 90% or greater accuracy on data collection. In July, DOE rated LM green on all its assets. A site walkthrough of Weldon Spring Site also resulted in a final scorecard of green.
“This result is a product of several people, teams and activities that take place throughout the year within the LM and LMSP FIMS team,” Steinau added. “Sites are constantly changing and evolving, and we have the best people working to make sure all of that information is updated in the system accordingly.”
Every January, the LM and LMSP FIMS team assembles data validation packages for its real property assets. These include data fields that are required for maintaining and managing these assets through the system. Data like annual actual maintenance and operating cost and repair needs are included to be validated. This requires a lot of moving parts and a lot of teamwork to accomplish.
“LM site managers and LMSP site leads are heavily involved in making sure the data at these sites is correct,” Steinau said. “If something needs updated or was accidentally omitted, site leads alert the FIMS team to correct it. It can be a very intense process.”
In fact, LM and LMSP FIMS team fill and validate more than 8,000 data fields annually in the FIMS database — and once validation is finished, the team is already preparing for the next.
“DOE requires certain information at certain times, and that is set up in the system and staggered throughout the year,” Steinau said. “This process is a prime example of not only the hard work and teamwork across LM and LMSP, but how we really work together as one entity to achieve LM’s mission.”
