August 26, 2026Funding will support the project team's small-scale research and development of non-volatile solid refrigerants for use in heat exchangers and cooling systems. Specifically, the project team will (1) test and validate solid refrigerant material to meet cooling and durability metrics, (2) develop, test, and validate a prototype solid refrigerant-coated heat exchanger to meet performance metrics, (3) further refine refrigerant material, test and validate to show improved performance, (4) fabricate, test, and validate full heat exchanger system with solid refrigerant material to meet performance metrics, and (5) conduct a techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment for next phase development. If successful, this project will result in an energy-saving solid refrigerant heat exchanging system, ultimately improving energy efficiency and reducing dependence on foreign energy, thereby increasing U.S. energy security.
