CX-271060: Northeastern University - Modular Electrochemical Ethanol Production Using Intermittent Power (Electricity)

This Third Amended Determination follows the approval of additional funding, extended period of performance, change of teaming partners, and new project milestones to support the project team's small-scale research and development activities of creating a modular reactor design to convert dilute carbon dioxide into a concentrated ethanol product, in progress under the Optimized Flexible Fuels using Grid-free Reactors with Intermittent Delivery (OFF GRID, formerly GREENWELLS) Program.

This Third Amended Determination follows the approval of additional funding, extended period of performance, change of teaming partners, and new project milestones to support the project team's small-scale research and development activities of creating a modular reactor design to convert dilute carbon dioxide into a concentrated ethanol product, in progress under the Optimized Flexible Fuels using Grid-free Reactors with Intermittent Delivery (OFF GRID, formerly GREENWELLS) Program. Specifically, the project team will (1) develop a process to synthesize a larger volume of catalyst, (2) test and validate synthesis process and catalyst outputs to meet project metrics, (3) design, fabricate, and assemble scaled-up reactor, (4) test and validate reactor outputs to meet performance metrics, (5) design, fabricate, and assemble full-scale reactor, (6) test and validate full-scale reactor outputs to meet performance metrics, and (7) conduct a techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment for the next phase of development. If successful, this project would enable an electrochemical reactor to efficiently produce liquid fuels, ultimately reducing dependence on foreign energy sources, thereby increasing U.S. energy security.
