NextEra Energy's restart of the Duane Arnold Energy Center—Iowa’s only nuclear plant—will provide reliable baseload power to the grid and support growing energy demands in the Hawkeye State.

PROJECT SUMMARY

In September 2026, EDF closed on an up to $1.9 billion loan to NextEra Energy that will help finance the restart of the Duane Arnold Energy Center, Iowa’s only nuclear plant, in Linn County, Iowa. Once restarted, pending U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing approvals, the nuclear plant will provide reliable baseload power to the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) grid while supporting growing energy demands in Iowa.

PROJECT IMPACT

The recommissioning of the 615 MW nuclear power plant—which ceased operations in 2020 and is capable of powering nearly 500,000 homes—will deliver reliable baseload power to the local grid while supporting the growing energy needs of cloud and AI infrastructure.

ECONOMIC IMPACT

The Duane Arnold restart project will strengthen grid reliability and the benefit Eastern Iowa with increased generation capacity. It will also create approximately 1,500 American jobs during construction and refurbishment, more than 462 high-quality American jobs during operations.
