Background Information

On July 23, 2026, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office (HGEO) announced up to $65.5 million in federal funding for cost-shared research, development, and deployment projects to strengthen domestic oil and natural gas production, improve the efficiency and reliability of critical energy infrastructure, and convert underutilized resources into valuable products. The funding opportunity supports technologies that maximize the productivity of existing infrastructure, expand the capacity and performance of energy delivery systems, and strengthen the resilience of America’s oil and natural gas supply chain. 

Eligibility

Eligible applicants include institutions of higher education, for- and non-profit organizations, state and local governments, and Indian Tribes.

Topic Areas 

This funding opportunity has three topic areas

  1. Topic Area 1: Enhanced Resource Utilization and Production Technologies (ERUPT)
    • Topic Area 1a: Laboratory Validation of Catalysts and Unit Operations
    • Topic Area 1b: Field Validation of Full System Prototypes
  2. Topic Area 2: Resilient Infrastructure Technologies Enhancement (RITE)
  3. Topic Area 3: Hydrocarbon Infrastructure Test Sites (HITS)

Funding 

DOE expects to make up to 16 awards for a total of $65.5 million with a minimum of a 20% cost-sharing from the awardees.
