Funding will support the project team's small-scale research and development of a novel recyclable thermoset resin and a closed-loop recycling technology for the purpose of enabling fully recyclable fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. Specifically, the project team will (1) identify, test, and select potential resin materials; (2) test and validate final resin materials for strength and recyclability; (3) identify potential fiber components, virtually model and simulate performance to select final fiber components; (5) fabricate initial fiber components, test and validate to meet performance standards; (6) test and validate recyclability and performance of combined FRP composite materials to meet final performance standards for FRP composites and recycling process; and (7) conduct a techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment for next phase development. If successful, this project will result in a stronger, more economical process to produce and recycle FRP composites, applicable to automotive, aerospace, and construction sectors, ultimately reducing dependence on foreign energy, and thereby increasing U.S. energy security.
