June 26, 2026This Amended Determination follows the approval of additional funding, extended period of performance, and new project milestones to support the project team's small-scale research and development activities of a 10-kilovolt high-frequency press-pack silicon-carbide metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor module solution for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and medium-voltage direct current (MVDC) to enhance power grid resilience. Specifically, the project team will (1) fabricate, test, and validate additional modules and auxiliary power, and (2) prepare system design for next-stage development. If successful, this project would result in modules with 30 times faster switching frequency and 5 times higher power density than the state of the art and enable high-control-bandwidth, fault-tolerant, power-dense, and cost-effective HVDC and MVDC converters to enhance transmission and distribution grid resilience, thereby increasing U.S. energy security.
