While many creatures inhabit the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL), the mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) is the only deer species at the site nestled in the hills of eastern Ventura County, California. The native mule deer isn’t currently endangered, but some populations have declined due to habitat loss, drought, wildfires, disease and barriers to migration.
