May 29, 2026Funding will support the project team's small-scale research and development of protein exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolyzers to produce hydrogen by using new materials, designs, and manufacturing processes to overcome high operating and capital costs associated with conventional PEM water electrolyzers. Specifically, the project team will (1) develop, test, and validate mathematical models of electrolyzer cells, (2) develop, test, and validate full PEM system model, (3) fabricate, test, and validate single electrolyzer cell performance, (4) fabricate, test, and validate full PEM system to meet performance metrics, and (5) conduct a techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment for next phase development.
