Funding will support the project team's small-scale research and development of a process to break down and measure critical mineral elements in electronic waste (e-waste) and the development of cost-effective extraction methods of critical minerals and materials. Specifically, the project team will (1) collect, process, and evaluate e-waste to ascertain critical material content, (2) develop, test, and validate extraction methods to process critical materials and other products from e-waste, (3) establish metrics for mineral and other material extraction methods to create process standards and valuation, (4) test and validate proof of concept for metrics and material recovery, and (5) conduct a techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment for next phase development.
