Funding will support the project team's small-scale research and development of vacuum swing adsorption units with targeted, specific adsorbents for the removal and concentration of radionuclides from used nuclear fuel (UNF). Specifically, the project team will (1) finalize adsorbent materials based on cost and effectiveness, (2) design a complete 3D model system to include materials, equipment list, etc., (3) test and validate model system for safety and effectiveness metrics, (4) fabricate scaled system, test and validate operation to meet safety and performance metrics, and (5) finalize system design for next stage development.
