WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) today issued its Final Site-Wide Environmental Impact Statement and Record of Decision to implement an Expanded Operations Alternative to manage Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico (SNL/NM), in the coming years.

The Record of Decision accompanies completion of SNL/NM’s Sitewide Environmental Impact Statement, which followed the National Environmental Policy Act to evaluate potential environmental impacts of three options for continuing SNL/NM operations through approximately 15 years.

The Expanded Operations Alternative will enable SNL/NM to build and/or upgrade facilities and infrastructure, and to perform decontamination, decommissioning, and demolition projects such as Combined Radiation Environments for Survivability Testing Complex. Additionally, this alternative will expand SNL/NM programs and capabilities to respond to national security challenges and meet increasing requirements.

The Final SNL/NM SWEIS, and ROD will be available here. This SWEIS will also appear in the Environmental Protection Agency’s weekly Notice of Availability in the Federal Register for NEPA documents.
