Funding will support the project team's small-scale research and development of a hydrokinetic energy generation system that operates in arrays to optimize system mass and performance. Specifically, the project team will (1) develop, test, and refine turbine performance in lab conditions, (2) develop full device system, lab test and validate performance metrics, (3) apply test results to full system design for field deployment and testing, (4) deploy system for 6-month field testing, (5) retrieve field test system, document and analyze system performance and durability, (6) apply upgrades to next generation systems, (7) deploy next-generation system for a three month test period, and (8) validate performance metrics and prepare final system for next stage development. If successful, the project will result in low-cost water-driven hydraulic energy production, ultimately reducing dependence on foreign energy sources, thereby increasing U.S. energy security.
