The Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Energy (NE) is dedicated to advancing nuclear power as a critical component of the nation's energy and security framework by fostering the development and deployment of advanced nuclear technologies. This commitment involves enhancing the long-term viability and safety of the existing U.S. reactor fleet through research and development, alongside actively cultivating an advanced reactor pipeline. This pipeline includes diverse new concepts such as small modular reactors (SMRs), microreactors, and advanced non-light water reactors, designed for improved safety, efficiency, and integration with other energy sources, with significant DOE funding supporting their deployment to meet growing electricity demands from various sectors.

Beyond reactor technology, NE's strategy extends to establishing and maintaining a robust national nuclear fuel cycle and supply chain infrastructure, ensuring domestic availability of specialized uranium for both current and future advanced reactors. The office also invests in early-stage research for recycling used nuclear fuel to maximize resource utilization and improve waste management sustainability.
