Timothy J. Walsh serves as Assistant Secretary for the Office of Environmental Management at the U.S. Department of Energy, providing strategic leadership for the safe and effective remediation of environmental legacies stemming from eight decades of nuclear weapons development and government-sponsored nuclear energy research.

In partnership with local communities, industry partners, and stakeholders, Walsh will lead EM’s office to be future focused on revitalizing EM sites through reindustrialization to bolster energy production, AI advancement, and manufacturing dominance. 

A seasoned engineering and construction executive with a distinguished military background, Walsh grew up in a military family, relocating frequently across the United States, Europe and the Middle East, where he immersed himself in local cultures and languages. 

Walsh served eight years as an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, leading a platoon of combat engineers in Germany, overseeing construction projects in Turkey, and commanding a company of paratroopers in the 82nd Airborne Division during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star. 

Transitioning to the private sector, Walsh directed the construction of several large-scale, high-tech, fast-tracked projects in the United States and Brazil for the semiconductor, biotechnology, and telecommunications industries. In the early 2000s, he led a Colorado-based construction company to substantial growth. In 2006, he and his wife, Lisa, co-founded a vertically integrated real estate development, construction, and property management firm, completing over $2.5 billion in projects focused on sustainable, walkable mixed-use communities.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point. He has a master’s degree in civil engineering and construction management from Stanford University.

Happily married to Lisa for 35 years, Walsh is the proud father of two adult children residing in Colorado. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoys biking, hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, and golfing in his leisure time. Walsh is deeply committed to community service and has served on numerous boards and, together with his wife, has been actively involved in philanthropic initiatives.
