Funding will support the project team's small-scale research and development of a process to capture helium from U.S. well sites by leveraging greenhouse gas (GHG)-free combustion of co-extracted geologic hydrogen to power a novel separation process. Specifically, the project team will (1) conduct simulations of a polymeric membrane system to optimize initial performance and function under expected field conditions, (2) apply simulation results to membrane configuration and synthesize polymer structures for testing and validation, (3) based on test results, select final materials for membrane, (4) conduct testing to meet performance objectives, (5) fabricate final membranes and system components to develop complete prototype modules, (6) identify and finalize field test location, (7) prepare full system for field testing, (8) conduct field test of full prototype system to meet predetermined performance metrics.
