Funding will support the project team's small-scale research and development of a Quantum Enhanced Photonic Radio Frequency Imaging Technology to map the structural integrity of rock formations, identify fault zones, and detect fluid-filled fractures for more accurate geothermal assessments and production management. Specifically, the project team will (1) design, develop, validate, and finalize their testing system and lab setup to meet predetermined metrics, (2) develop and fabricate, procure, test, and validate system components, (3) assemble technology system, test and validate in closed loop system to meet predetermined performance metrics, (4) make final system adjustments and incorporate into final technology design for future full-scale testing. If successful, this project will result in a technology capable of imaging fracture networks, enhancing operational efficiency, and improving safety margins, applicable to enhanced geothermal systems and other subsurface imaging use cases, ultimately reducing dependence on foreign energy sources, thereby increasing U.S. energy security.
