Funding will support the project team's small-scale research and development of a lignin-based concrete from waste biomass as a reduced-cost, lower-emission alternative for buildings and construction. Specifically, the project team will (1) produce and test prototype concrete bricks to meet evaluation criteria; (2) integrate test outcomes and produce a large volume of bricks; and (3) test and validate scaled bricks both outdoors at National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and in the lab. If successful, this project would enable a cost-effective, low-emission, renewable-sourced concrete alternative, resulting in construction materials with a reduced environmental footprint.
