Dawn Zimmer was appointed in November 2025 as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). In this role, she leads DOE’s enterprise information technology and cybersecurity initiatives, ensuring that DOE’s systems are secure, efficient, and innovative. Dawn plays a pivotal role in aligning DOE’s IT modernization efforts with its broader mission priorities, including transformative technology programs that advance U.S. energy security and innovation.
With over 25 years of experience and a proven track record of excellence across government, academia, and the private sector, Ms. Zimmer brings a deep understanding of how to build and sustain high-performing technology organizations. Before joining DOE, she served as Executive Director of IT Engagement & Experience at Virginia Tech, where she led university-wide initiatives to enhance digital service delivery and user experience. Her federal experience includes senior leadership roles at the Federal Aviation Administration and Department of Justice, where she advanced enterprise IT modernization, strengthened cybersecurity resilience, and established user-centered service frameworks.
She is widely recognized for her strategic vision, collaborative leadership style, and ability to bridge technology and mission objectives.
