Illuminated Exit Signs

As defined in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), “illuminated exit sign” means a sign that - (1) Is designed to be permanently fixed in place to identify an exit; and (2) Consists of an electrically powered integral light source that - (i) Illuminates the legend “EXIT” and any directional indicators; and (ii) Provides contrast between the legend, any directional indicators, and the background. 10 CFR 431.202 Manufacturers have been required to comply with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) energy conservation standards for illuminated exit signs since 2005.
