The DOE Office of Legacy Management took responsibility for the Plowshare/Vela Uniform/Weapons-Related Records Site in 2019. This includes 166 projects that are within the United States and were part of the Plowshare and Vela Uniform Programs. The goal of the Plowshare Program was to use nuclear explosives for peaceful purposes. Vela Uniform was an element of Project Vela conducted jointly by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and U.S. Department of Defense. Its purpose was to develop the technological ability to detect and identify underground and underwater nuclear detonations. Some of the 166 projects did not progress beyond the planning phase and some resulted in AEC activities at one or more sites.
