Dear colleagues,
As the Director of Department of Energy’s Office of Science, it is my goal to provide the next generation with the experience and training needed to meet future scientific challenges. But we can’t do this alone - we need your expertise to help us determine the best path forward to prepare our workforce. With that in mind, I would like to bring to your attention the Request for Information (RFI) for Preparing a Future Workforce in Quantum Information Science (QIS). Your feedback is needed no later than April 20, 2023. The input you share will be extremely valuable and appreciated as we all work together to develop a Quantum Workforce of the future.
Quantum Information Science is a rapidly developing area of science and technology. It has huge potential to profoundly impact the U.S. economy and national security, through advances in quantum computing, simulation, communication, and sensing.
This RFI requests input from all higher education institutions on approaches needed to prepare students for careers related to Quantum Information Science:
- Understanding of the landscape of QIS education
- Identifying opportunities where DOE could assist in training the future scientific and technological QIS workforce
We especially encourage input from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Minority Serving Institutions, community colleges, and other emerging research institutions.
Your thoughts on preparing our next generation for working in Quantum Information Science are important to us. I strongly encourage you to provide your feedback at https://www.regulations.gov/document/DOE-HQ-2023-0021-0001, no later than April 20, 2023.
We will use your responses to help inform the development of a Department of Energy plan to work with higher education institutions in developing the Quantum workforce of the future.
Sincerely,
Asmeret Asefaw Berhe, Ph.D.
Director
Office of Science
