Yesterday marked the second workshop in an ongoing Department of Energy-sponsored event series that will serve as the foundation for an upcoming National Strategic Smart Manufacturing Plan. These three hybrid workshops, led by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, seek to address the urgent need to accelerate the adoption of smart manufacturing technologies and processes across the U.S. industrial sector.

Advanced technologies such as advanced sensors, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning and modeling can help U.S. manufacturers capture, share, and process data in real-time. This leads to operational improvements, productivity gains, more reliable equipment, and increased competitiveness of the U.S. manufacturing sector. These new technologies are rapidly revolutionizing manufacturing with implications for industry, government, and the American workforce.

Not only does smart manufacturing promote operational excellence, but it also supports energy productivity, waste reduction, and efficiency. DOE is laser-focused on developing and sustainably producing the technologies that will power our clean energy future right here at home. These workshops welcome input from stakeholders across industry, academia, and government.
