
Dr. Ali Douraghy is currently Principal Deputy Under Secretary for Science & Innovation at the U.S. Department of Energy, where he has served since January 2021. As PDUS, he leads day-to-day management and oversight for a $15 billion portfolio of activities across DOE’s Office of Science, Applied Energy Programs and 13 National Laboratories, the premier engines of scientific discovery and clean energy innovation. Dr. Douraghy’s portfolio includes the DOE teams leading the Energy Earthshots Initiative and Science & Energy Crosscuts, and the Under Secretary’s senior advisors coordinating DOE activities in fusion energy, critical materials, carbon removal and research security.
Dr. Douraghy has previously held leadership roles at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, the U.S. Agency for International Development and the U.S. Embassy in Indonesia. Dr. Douraghy received his PhD in Biomedical Physics from the UCLA School of Medicine and BS/MS degrees in Biomedical Engineering. He is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
